IEC Filters for Industrial Automation | Solve Harmonic & EMI Interference

In industrial automation production lines, a large number of electronic devices, motors, and frequency converters operate simultaneously, creating a complex electromagnetic environment and various interference issues. As critical electromagnetic interference suppression components, IEC filters mitigate many types of interference to keep production lines running reliably.

Harmonic Interference

Frequency converters are widely used for speed regulation. During operation, power electronic devices switch with non-sinusoidal waveforms, generating substantial harmonic currents and voltages. Harmonics increase grid power losses, reduce power factor, cause grid voltage fluctuations, and disrupt the operation of other equipment. They also create extra losses and temperature rise inside motors and other components, shortening component service life and even triggering resonance that threatens grid safety.

IEC filters use internal components to form filter networks, absorbing or shunting harmonics to reduce their disturbance to the power grid and equipment. For example, active power line filters monitor and dynamically inject compensation current to counteract harmonics, while passive filters rely on resonance characteristics to absorb specific frequency harmonics.

Power Supply Interference

Factory power supplies are often unstable, with voltage fluctuations, surge overvoltages and other conditions. Disconnecting large inductive loads can generate surge overvoltages superimposed on grid voltage. Starting heavy-load equipment leads to short-duration grid voltage drops. High-power thyristor switching distorts grid voltage waveforms, and power transmission lines pick up high-frequency radiated interference signals. These disturbances travel through power cables into control cabinets and disrupt equipment operation.

IEC inlet power filters are power-line EMI filters. They suppress this interference by selectively absorbing and attenuating electromagnetic wave frequencies via internal components, delivering clean power for equipment.

Space Electromagnetic Interference

Industrial automation production lines are surrounded by magnetic fields, electromagnetic fields and static electric fields. Sources include solar and cosmic radiation, broadcast transmitters, and electromagnetic radiation emitted by nearby equipment. These field disturbances propagate through power supplies or transmission lines and affect functional modules, causing voltage shifts or pulsed interference signals.

For instance, power cables carrying heavy current produce strong electric fields, which interfere with adjacent circuits through stray capacitance. Transformers, AC motors and other devices that generate alternating electromagnetic fields induce electromotive force and current interference in nearby electronic circuits. IEC filters reduce power supply noise, improve signal-to-noise ratio, boost system transmission and reception performance, and resist space electromagnetic interference.

Electromechanical Equipment Interference

Large contactors, solenoid valves and other electromechanical devices on production lines generate electric sparks when energized or de-energized, interfering with electrical control cabinets. Additionally, common conductors in electronic control units contain resistance and inductance. When current flows through one loop, a voltage drop develops, coupling to other loops and creating common-impedance interference.

IEC filters suppress electromagnetic interference, cut down power supply noise, protect electronic devices and ensure stable operation of control cabinets.

IEC filters resolve multiple interference issues on industrial automation production lines. They are essential hardware to maintain stable line operation, raise production efficiency and improve product quality. Their adoption will become more widespread as industrial automation continues advancing.
